Blu-ray version of Elton 60: Buyer beware!!!
3 out of 5 stars.
Amazon's product description is inaccurate for the Blu-ray release of Elton 60. Unlike the DVD version, the Blu-ray release DOES NOT contain "...over a dozen rare television performances from throughout his career." The Blu-ray version contains the concert only.

As a long-time Elton fan, I recommend buying the DVD version.

Best Elton John concert ever

Elton John: Elton 60 - Live at Madison Square Garden

This is the best Elton John concert I have ever seen, even taking into account the live ones I have personally attended. The many close up shots mean that you get to view the concert better than if you were there yourself. Picture quality, camera angles, sound quality, song selection, and performance are all superb. Not to be missed by fans and non-fans alike!

A High Flying Condert

Off the top, I have to admit that I am biased towards Elton John. His music has given me more pleasure since the early seventies than any other performer. I'll admit there was a period in the 80's and 90's when I was not so fond of his songs. I have heard him say that he was on a drug induced ego trip, and he feels the same way about this period. But even during this period he wrote some great music. I do feel that he was at his most creative during the early seventies.
I was always diasappointed that I never had a chance to see Elton John live. So when Concert DVD's became available, I bought a couple of E.J. concerts, including "One Night Only" and a concert recorded in Spain. I enjoyed both of them, but lamented the fact that the sound was not the best, or that he did not do enough of his early material.
Then I bought this 60th birthday concert recorded at Madison Square Garden. I can now say that of the 50 or so DVD Concerts that I own, this is the best I have seen or heard. He does enough of his old songs to please even me. The musicians are amazingly tight, giving the songs an extra groove and the Harlem Youth Choir adds a dimension to the music that makes the songs sound better than they did on the original albums. The DTS sound production is the best I have ever heard. I found myself sitting, rapt and grinning for most of the show. After each song, I would wonder how it could get better, and then the next song would show me how. About 1 month after I first viewed this DVD, I managed to get tickets to a performance E.J. is giving in Halifax. This concert is still 2 months away, but I find myself wondering if seeing him live will live up to this video. That is how much I enjoyed watching this DVD.
As I said before, I am biased. However, my 20 year old neice and my 21 year old son watched this concert with me last weekend, and now they have both become Elton John fans. I believe that anyone would love this concert.

Then to top it all off, there are the live and rare recordings included in this DVD. Some of these were done when he was a young musician, obviously performing his heart out for the love of the music, before the fame and glitter took over. Some of these early performances alone are worth the price of this DVD.
I heartily recommend this concert to any one who enjoys music. I would give it 6 stars if Amazon would let me.

John Baxter

Complete DVD package but the sound engineer should be fired
5 out of 5 stars.
Just got and viewed this DVD set from Amazon. Martin C did a great job in reviewing this DVD and there is not much to add regarding the content. I have seen Elton twice in concert and he always puts on a great live show. This particular show was amazing (I envy the lucky souls who had tickets to see this in person). As Martin said there were an amazing number of songs covered at the concert.

Not all is perfect though. I do have a complaint about the way in which the concert was engineered for DVD. In nearly every song Elton's voice (Your Song being a notable exception) sounds muffled because the engineer had the pods/sliders on his soundboard set way too high for the DVD. In many of the other songs the clarity of the bandmember's instruments is hidden in a wall of sound. In addition and not surprising the only instrument that consistently sounds clear throughout is Elton's piano. Elton John may be the front-man but as a longtime fan (35 years) of the man's music, there is a lot more to the music than Elton and his piano. The banjo was almost not heard at all on Honky Cat, acoustic guitar was always given faraway background status, the bass was just a thudding thump with no clarity at all. In some of the songs where guitar should be up-front it was pushed back behind the piano. Backing vocals (except for the choir which came through nicely) from Davey and Nigel were severely muted. This poor engineering really does a discredit to some of the songs which is a real shame.

One could argue that this is the way recorded concerts are. Not so. Go buy and view the Genesis - When In Rome: Live 2007, any Sheryl Crow concert show, or even better the The Eagles - Farewell 1 Tour: Live From Melbourne 2004 (2DVD) which is the ultimate in live concert DVD recording as far as I am concerned (a single even came out of that one).

As Martin said the addition of the archival material was incredible and pretty much makes up for the mis-engineering of the concert. The price at Amazom was very reasonable and I am enough of a fan that it was still a treat to see the concert. If you were buying this only for the concert footage though, I don't think it rates 5 stars.

Sixty Years On!
5 out of 5 stars.
Elton John has produced a dozen or so concert DVD's, but this is the ultimate in entertainment. Recorded on his 60th birthday at his 60th performance at Madison Square Garden, this DVD excels in pure entertainment satisfaction. Over two DVD's you witness thirty-three classic songs from over the last five decades including such little performed gems like, "Hercules" and "Roy Rogers". The standards like, "Crocodile Rock" and "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" are also lent out in slightly new versions that more than please.

Unlike the Madison Square Garden show he previously released with shots of fans over-riding the stage show; this one showcases those people as well as dozens of famous political, musical and acting celebrities. Robin Williams and Whoopie Goldberg bring on a fantastic, "Happy Birthday" and Bernie Taupin, who never appears on stage, gives a heart-felt salute to Elton on his birthday. It's all amazingly good fun and very emotional.

The light show is fantastic and the sound is pin-point perfect with a large young choir singing backstage that enhances the performance like no other Elton John has given. It truly feels like the celebration in New York City that night was something very special.

That's not all. This double disc set also includes eighteen "live, rare & unseen" performances from over the years that are a stunning reminder of what a fantastic musician Elton John is. On top of that, there is a section called, "Elton's New York Stories" that includes four personal emotional song videos of Elton that just pack more of a whollop you would not expect.

The sound quality (DVD, dts, 5.1) is superb enough to hear audience members actually talking and the band never sounded more crisp. Add to that an extensive booklet of liner notes and you have a keeper of a Birthday celebration. Elton John - you are a spectacle of a celebration!
