Editorial Reviews:
Canada certainly has produced a healthy collection of females singing loungey jazz covers in the last decade (Diana Krall may well be the matriarch, with Holly Cole and Sophie Milman following behind) so the question remains... how does Emily-Claire Barlow stand out from her competition? Well, creative control, for one thing, having produced and arranged The Very Thought of You, as well as writing the arrangements and conducting the string section on her disc. The end result is a collection that is a little more musically expansive than some of her traditionalist counterparts. The title track oozes its way forward, lushly and restrained; on the second track, "Almost Like Being in Love" Barlow commandingly scats, as she does in and out of a number of tunes, including "Surrey with the Fringe on Top," that features a beguiling arrangement that's far more sexy than perky. As for what the disc does best? That answer would have to be the way the Torontonian embraces jazzy samba and bossa nova rhythms on a number of different tracks, including the playful "Pennies from Heaven," "De Conversa Em Conversa" and the sensually breathy "So Many Stars." --Denise Sheppard

Custom Reviews:
Emilie-Claire's most personal album to date.
4 out of 5 stars.
Add the talented voice of Emilie-Claire Barlow to a list that includes Diana Krall, Madeleine Peyroux, Regina Belle, Rossana Casale, Stacey Kent, Jane Monheit, Holly Cole and Sophie Milman.
These women all share an affinity for the Great American Songbook, they love bossa nova and samba, they have substantial vocal chops and they sing in two or more languages to cement their savoir-faire.
That's all here in a moody version of "The Very Thought of You", "Les Yeux Vert", sung beautifully in French, and a reading of the '60s pop hit "Dream a Little Dream of Me".
The arrangements are fresh and focused, and all her own. Joined by an all-star band and some fabulous guest soloists, Emilie-Claire leads the group, including a large string ensemble, through gems from the American Songbook ("Almost Like being In Love", "What A Little Moonlight Can Do", "Surrey With The Fringe on Top"), beautiful bossa novas ("So Many Stars", "De Conversa Em Conversa"), and even a few tunes in French.
Emilie Claire has a tendency at times to fall into a breathy little girl voice that's meant to be winsome and sexy, but the affectation simply detracts from her sophisticated persona, which is underscored by the fact she produced and arranged the entire session, and arranged and conducted the string parts.
No small feat !
Enjoy!

A delightful and enchanting album.
5 out of 5 stars.
I bought this album on a recent visit to Canada. I wanted to buy a Canadian artist to take back home to the UK where I live. I saw this on the shelf and thought this could be quite good. In fact, when I played it on my hi-fi, I was blown away by its quality and excellent arrangements. The gorgeous string arrangements and the sound of the band give the songs an extra fizz and energy.

There are high quality songs on this superb cd and my favourite tracks, if I were to pick any, are "The Very Thought Of You", a terrific opener that sets the mood of the album, "What A Little Moonlight Can Do", "Lex Yeux Ouverts", a lovely French rendition of Dream A Little Dream Of Me, "O Pato (The Duck)", a wonderful bouncy and joyful track and "So Many Stars".

Given that I loved all the songs on this amazing cd, I choose not to choose specific tracks but the whole album. Anyone interested in the jazz genre should own a copy of this enchanting album. This is a real gem.
