| | Previously better known as the studio genius behind hits by Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen - and as the well-connected stepson of Foreigner's Mick Jones - Mark Ronson is one of the increasing number of producers making their own star-packed albums. In fairness, this is his second solo effort and it was his first ( 2003's "Here Comes The Fuzz") that helped win the stellar admirers. Here his inspired idea is to take his favourite rock and pop tracks, rev them up with funky beats, a horn section and his famous mates and transform them into Motown/Stax era party tunes. When it works - Coldplay's "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face", The Smiths' "Stop Me" and The Jam's "Pretty Green" - the result is magic upbeat splendour from sulky classics. But it's not long before the formula begins to grate. As covers go, Robbie Williams singing The Charlatans' "The Only One I Know" is as tawdry as Paul Young's "Love Will Tear Us Apart".
