if they could only REDO the special effects
4 out of 5 stars.
This is one of those one off "definitive" films depicting certain event of the Second World War. The film tells the story of the 1943 bombing raids on the Ruhr dams in the heart of Germany. It details the men, the training and the sacrifice of the 617 Squadron for this operation.
Filmed so shortly after the war it has authenticity, the maker of the special "bouncing" bombs was still very much alive. And the acting is fine.

The only problem is the special effects which are really TERRIBLE, instead of using explosives on miniature models, they decided to use some sort of "cartoon" effect looking like (and probably is some film of)waterfalls posed as exploded water columns !!!
How is it possible that they could use real Lancaster bombers and yet fail utterly to convince at these crucial shots ??????

Even as a kid watching this made me laugh and I still do.

With advanced computer technology these days, I am sure thay can do a frame by frame redoing of those explosion scenes using CGI which will for sure enhance the pleasure of watching this otherwise very well made film.

There is no need to remake this movie, just touch up those explosions !

Inspirational!
5 out of 5 stars.
This movie is simply inspirational. From the "stiff upper lip" bravery of the pilots, to the perseverance of the scientists to the loving support of wives - it shows wartime Britain at its best.

This movie shows the courage and inspiration behind the development of the "bouncing bomb", and the the necessary "out of the box" thinking needed by everyone concerned to complete the mission. George Lucas lists this as among his favourite movies, and it is consistently ranked in the top #50 British movies of all time.

The transfer to DVD is superb, sound and picture quality is execellent.

Politically correct revisionists should beware that the wing commanders black lab dog is called the "n" word.

I would not hesitate to buy it. And it is a movie all the family can watch as there is no graffic violence.

6 stars out of 5!
