Editorial Reviews:
Forget Breaking Bonaduce or The Surreal Life. Ewan McGregor has made a celebrity reality series that's entertaining without having to be called a guilty pleasure. Long Way Round is a documentary detailing the 20,000-mile motorcycle trip he took around the world with best friend Charley Boorman over 115 days. Their trip took them from London through locales such as Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, and Canada, to name a few, before ending in New York. Armed with a cameraman, McGregor and Boorman encounter separation anxiety from their families; a shifty stranger (later revealed to be Mafia) who leads them through winding dark corridors to a posh hotel room; delays at international borders; hosts who offer them Fear Factor-level animal parts for dinner; injuries, equipment breakdowns, and more. The pair also film their own video diaries, in which they voice concerns and frustrations. The result is an emotional, rich breadth of experiences, from the hardship of logistical setbacks paired with the joy of visiting the children of Chernobyl and encountering hospitable locals who insist on escorting them wherever they go. McGregor and Boorman also make witty emcees, cheerfully upbeat even when they wonder aloud if one of their gun-happy hosts is a psycho murderer. The journey concludes with their emotional ride into the Big Apple and some surprises for the pair courtesy of the show's producers. The DVD set also includes some can't miss deleted scenes. Long Way Round may have been an arduous once-in-a-lifetime experience, but you can't help but hope McGregor and Boorman suit up for another road trip someday. -- Ellen A. Kim.

An inspirational poster on two wheels
5 out of 5 stars.
Excellent series and very inspirational, even for non-riders such as myself. I think it must sum up all of the very best and worst aspects of motorcycling; the freedom and pleasure it brings as well as the adversity and pain that comes with it. The people that Ewan and Charlie meet along the way are all gracious, the landscape is so varied and breathtaking, that even someone with no connection to motorcycling would find the experience an enticing arguement for buying their first motorbike, as is my case.

What a fun ride!
5 out of 5 stars.
This series is AMAZING! I loved watching Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman ride around the world and seeing all their adventures and mishaps they had along the way. It was funny, touching, exciting, and riveting, so it was definitely a roller-coaster ride just watching them. And it was really great to see all the different countries and the interesting people they met.

I highly recommend this series for motorcycle lovers and non-motorcycle lovers alike! (I'm in the latter category...well I was before watching this series, I have a new respect for motorcycling). I'm also pumped to watch their next series Long Way Down where they travel from Scotland down to South Africa, but I can't seem to find the American DVD format available. Either that, or it's so popular it sold out very quickly, as it was released in June of this year.

A word of warning though, there is quite a bit of swearing in this series, especially as they get along on their journey. Nothing too profane, just typical for a bunch of guys hanging out together for a long period of time.

Thankfully our DVDs did not skip or anything, even on our low-quality DVD player. Perhaps it's just the luck of the draw, or perhaps the manufacturer have fixed the issues concerning the quality.

Not just for bikers
5 out of 5 stars.
I've been riding bikes for years and have only dreamed of taking a trip even remotely like the one these boys took, but the dream is alive again after watching this! My wife, who has no interest in motorcycles, has thoroughly enjoyed watching the shows as well. It offers some fascinating insights into the peoples of the world which the average travel documentary would not do and Ewan and Charley come across as a great couple of guys. Both are charming and sincere and the show could not have been better casted had someone else come up with the idea. I will even forgive Ewan for Star Wars after getting to know him better here!

The shows are definitely edited to create little cliffhangers and sometimes they do focus on obstacles which seem to take too much airtime in my view, but I suspect that the airtime is largely weighted by how significant the events were to the people on the trip, for example crossing the river on the Road of Bones. Twenty minutes for twenty feet of travel, but it was a significant problem to overcome. If you want to watch people struggling to triumph over nature and circumstance, watch this movie.

To address some previous comments I've read, here and on Amazon.com: 1) yes, there could be more landscape cinematography than there is but this is a series about the journey and naturally it focuses on the team and the problems and victories they have. If you want a travelogue, buy a travelogue. 2) the suggestion that this would be a good vehicle for teaching your kids geography - yes, if you don't mind your kids being subjected to a lot of f***ing bad language while they study the globe. There really is quite a lot of swearing in it, which is one of the more unfortunate parts. 3) I watched this series on DVDs from the local library which have been handled and viewed by many people and they have played perfectly on my DVD player.

I highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in travelling, biking or even Ewan and Charley. It's a great ride from start to finish!

Glued to the screen

Completely engrossing. Two affable mates go on one great big adventure. That they have such easy to like personalities is what really makes this work. Both have a mix of charm and humility, have no problem showing their emotions and humanity and don't hold back just so they can look good. It all rings true and it was one helluva ride. Well planned for both them and us, well shot and editted, I look forward to their next adventure. *****

Great DVD's AND Kudos to amazon.ca

The series, particularly in this 10-episode version, is FANTASTIC. You'll want to go out and buy a motorcycle and ride along with Ewan and Charlie on their adventure. I bought one for myself and two more as Christmas presents for adventurous friends.

In addition, reference the technical problems customers have mentioned in several previous reviews, yes I experienced the exact same problems; apparently there exists a bad lot of this set with episodes 3 and 4 damaged. But upon filing an online return for the defective discs to amazon.ca, I immediately received GREAT customer service and responsiveness, and had three brand new sets within a week, all of which performed flawlessly. Really big ups to Amazon Canada. Cheers!
