| Editorial Reviews: | | | | | Serenity offers perfect proof that Firefly deserved a better fate than premature TV cancellation. Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in the Firefly backstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships (including the heartbreaking deaths of two major characters). Serenity's cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed, Serenity offered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-day Star Wars epics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. With the mega-corporate mysteries of Blue Sun yet to be explored, it's a safe bet we haven't seen the last of the good ship Serenity. --Jeff Shannon | |

| | I loved it. I loved the series, I loved the movie. I'm not going to go int more than that... except to say that I would have loved it even more would the stupid network not have cancelled the show in the first place so I could have watched the arc and story line and character development that would have broght us from the last episode of the series to the movie. whew... quite the run-on )
| | Better or worse than the show? I got no answers. | |
| | In many details I think the movie went in the wrong direction, but in many others it took the good path. Either way, it's Firefly and there ain't much better.
| | not exactly my bag, but well done | |
| | i'm not sure, but it think this movie may be related to the TV series,Firefly or at least have a similar style.if that's the case,it would probably be better to be familiar with the show before watching the movie.i have not seen the show,so that may explain why i didn't get the movie.or not.anyway,i don't think Serenity is a bad movie.in fact,i think it's well done.it looks great, and there are some amazing fight sequences.nevertheless,i couldn't follow it.the dialogue was different, sort what i would expect to hear during the Civil War era or in the old west.so, some of the things they talked about,i wasn't quite sure what they meant or what context to put things in.anyway, this movie wasn't really my bag,but i think fans of Firefly and a lot of general science fiction fans will enjoy it.for me,even though it's not my cup of tea,i'd still have to give Serenity a 3/5,because it is so well done.but that's just my opinion.
| | We may feel some slight turbulence... then explode! | |
| | Not having seen the television series, I was lured to the Theater with some trepidation. Would I even know what was going on? Would I somehow be missing out?
The answer was no. Serenity held nothing back. It gives the audience everything to feel like a part of this film with or without having seen the series that preceded it. It welcomed me in, then hit me with experiences I thought were impossible in a sci-fi movie. I was made to truly love, and believe every character in the film. It moved me, it scared me, it shocked me, and uplifted me. For two hours, I WAS aboard the Serenity, and lived what the characters lived, felt what they felt.
You may now call me a Browncoat. Serenity changed the way I look at movies.
This HD transfer is spot on. If ever you need an example of High Definition and what it can do, just pop in this title. Not one frame is without the all important WOW! factor. Every pixel, eye popping. The Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio gives everything it has, and lets you feel every rumble of the Serenity's engines, every pulse of pure death dealt by the Reavers, and the Alliance. 30 seconds into this movie, and you'll forget your living room exists. Beneath your feet will be hull plating, beyond your wall, the cold chill of hard vacuum. Hold on, this ride is about to get bumpy!
The bonus features are without flaw. The behind the scenes footage makes it feel like you are one of the gang, here to make one kick butt movie. Nothing is neglected. Not one stone unturned.
This title is THE #1 reason to own an HD DVD player. From the content of the film, to the stunning sights and sounds offered up by the format. Serenity will be watched over and over, and you too will become a Browncoat.
| | | If are wanting to pick this up because you think it has the extra footage cut into the movie then don't buy it. I picked it up the other weekend thinking it is an extended cut version of the movie but it isn't. there is a CD with all the extra stuff on it. I loved the movie its self and give it a 5 star but was disappointed that the collection DVD didn't have the extra footage cut back into the movie.
