Editorial Reviews:
Everyone grows up... even rappers. Pioneering female MC Queen Latifah shows a newfound level of maturity on The Dana Owens Album. A set of standards the rapper/actress decided to cover, the album features a host of jazz classics and R&B favorites.

Latifah is at her seductive best when playing the sultry siren on Al Green's "Simply Beautiful." With a little help from Green himself, Latifah's vocals slide over the warm, organ-drenched instrumental. The result is one that works today as well as it would have several years ago. Similarly, the big band-backed "Baby Get Lost" swings with bluesy groove that is pure nostalgia.

However, it's when Latifah mines more standard fare that the album seems to hita snag. Fans of James Moody's "Moody's Mood for Love" may want to skip Latifah's version, as it misses the subtle perfection of the original. Her rendition of "I Put a Spell On You" doesn't falter, but it's not impressive either. It ends up being the kind of performance that finds you constantly waiting for more but never getting it. The same can be said for her cover of the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'."

That said, with Latifah's recent critically acclaimed turn in the film Chicago, the album's timing couldn't have been better. And with help from legendary producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin), The Dana Owens Album is an interesting and impressive new chapter in the star's diverse career. --Rashaun Hall

Qui l'eût cru!
5 out of 5 stars.
Un album de jazz dans la plus pure tradition des Billie Holiday... Queen Latifah/Dana Owens entre dans la cour des Divas du Jazz. À suivre

Timeless songs revived by Owens'
4 out of 5 stars.
I have been following Queen Latifah ever since her Rap/Hip Hop days and have always admired her strength, poise, and positive outlook in life and in her music. She is an ideal role-model for the young generation of today not to mention she can sing without her voice being adjusted in pitch or tone in a recording studio to make her sound good, something that is unfortunately very rare in "singers" in the industry today.

These songs could belong to another place in time, but they certainly dust off well and thoroughly shine when Owens sings them. When she sings "Simply Beautiful" with the song's writer, Al Green, as back-up, the result is a perfect blend of their shared talent for spicing songs with soul-dousing splashes of improvised vocal accents. The result is simply beautiful. When Owens sings Bill Withers' "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh," she makes it all her own. Her vocal range is impeccable and her emotional connection to Withers' song while she sings it convinces the listener that she is actually sharing her thoughts about a recent heartache. It's easily assumed that Owens enjoyed recording these songs. Even though she has subtly refreshed each one, she does retain the aspects of these venerated songs that give each its personality.

The accompaniments are never overdone and are excellent. Consequently, this album is not at all overproduced. Other stand-out songs are Barbara Lewis' "Hello Stranger," Nat King Cole's "Lush Life" and The Mamas and the Papas "California Dreamin.'" However, had the latter not been perfectly tweaked with a jazzier accompaniment, it may have seemed just a bit out of place with its eleven companions on this CD. It's nice to hear aged but timeless songs revived by Owens' superb vocal performance and her amazing ability to perfectly interpret each one with mature eloquence. Very good album to own and to maximize your ears.

The Queen Hits A High Note
5 out of 5 stars.
The Queen may be a rapper, but she has the voice of an angel. Happened to catch the Queen on the Grammy's and was blown away by the song she sang. Went out the next day and bought the CD, which is great. Want to listen to a great voice, singing some great songs, then buy this disc. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Stunning!
5 out of 5 stars.
I heard someone singing Lush Life on CBC Radio last week, a version I had not heard before. When the announcer came on at the end of the song and said it was "Dana Owens, better known as Queen Latifah," I almost fell out of bed! I had to have the CD, and now I do. It is truly impressive, and I tip my hat to Ms. Owens.

LONG OVERDUE
