| Editorial Reviews: | | | | | Barbie shines in her third animated movie, an adaptation of the classic ballet Swan Lake. A young girl named Odette (played by Barbie) follows a beautiful unicorn into the enchanted forest and picks up a magic crystal that proclaims her destiny as savior of the enchanted forest. Odette, hampered by an overwhelming sense of insecurity, proclaims herself unfit for the job and sets out to leave the forest when the evil wizard Rothbart (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) turns her into a swan. Bolstered by the powers of the magic crystal, Odette vows to defeat Rothbart. Meanwhile, love blossoms between Odette and the town's Prince Daniel and, eventually, Odette finds a courage within herself that, combined with her intelligence and the true love between her and the Prince, proves powerful enough to defeat Rothbart. The computer-generated animation in this 83-minute presentation is vivid and lifelike, the London Symphony gives a wonderful performance of Tchaikovsky's original music, and the choreography and dancing is nicely done thanks to Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet. | | This movie is absolutely wonderful. Of all the Barbie movies I have to say that this one was my least favorite. The reason being that the bad guys were just to wierd. Rothbart's (I think I spelt that right) nose drove me up the wall. And his daughter's voice. Yuck! But other than that I loved it. And I am fifteen! My only sister loves it as well. I have five brothers and the youngest two keep trying to say they don't like it. They insist that the story is good but the characters are bad. I think they like them, they just don't want to admitt to liking a "girl" movie.
I think that any girl who enjoys Barbies will love these movies. Just be warned. They might get a little annoying if your girl watches them over and over again.
| | | Another hit for Barbie! Barbie of Swan Lake features beautiful costumes, losts of dancing and gracefully waving arms, and plenty of faithful friends. Ivan the porcupine and Carlitta the skunk are adorable characters and their constant bickering always makes my seven year old daughter giggle!!! Barbie's unicorn friend was a bit sassy and lacked the charm of Penelope the dragon, Barbie's sidekick in the Rapunzel movie. The villian Rothbart was trememndously voiced by Kelsey Grammar. And although a villain, too, Rothbart's daughter, Odelle, was very grating on the nerves. Her screeching voice goes way past annoying! Still, the movie is charming and little girls and their mom's, too, will be happy to own this one.
| | | | I haven't sat through this entire movie yet, just bits and pieces here and there. The fact is my almost three year old loves this one and the first one, so it gets my five star rating. If it can keep her attention for so long it must be entertaining.
| | | BEAUTFUL, as usual Mattel makes another gorgeous Barbie movie with an enchanting story to it! I own all 3, and I'm 22! Pathetic? No. Honest! So listen to me when I say little girls, and young at heart will enjoy these magical dvd's for years to come. Barbie Rocks! ~*~*~*~*~*~* :0)
| | Coming after Rapunzel, a disappointment | |
| | Coming off what I felt to be a very well done adaptation of the Rapunzel story, I felt Swan Lake to be a serious disappointment. The characters in this story are very different from it's predicessor. Odette's friends are hardly likable, the only exception being an amusing troll. The story line is disjunct and the computer animation (especially the children dancing)is rather poor and awkward. Gothbart the villian, is voiced wonderfully by Kelsey Grammer and is the only exceptional part of this production. Odelle (Gothbart's daughter and Odette's antithesis) is simply appauling in concept, pushing offensive, and it is difficult to watch the interaction between the two without feeling somewhat disturbed by the contrast. Sadly, I feel that this represents a poor general effort on the part of the creators and am left to wonder why they waisted their time on such a weak project. Rapunzel is the way to go. The story line is well done and truly uplifting.
