| Editorial Reviews: | | | | | Having already established themselves as the streetwise saviors of heavy metal's oft-tainted legacy in the '80s, Metallica rebounded from the accidental death of original bassist Cliff Burton to produce their most thematically challenging, musically accomplished album to date. Despite James Hetfield's dank, extended portraits of a world collapsing from corruption and decadence--themes that virtually guaranteed it little radio or television exposure--the album was nonetheless a muscular commercial success. Even "One," its complex, seven-and-a-half-minute adaptation of Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun," managed to scale the singles charts. Other highlights include "Blackened," "Eye of the Beholder," and the sweeping "To Live Is to Die," tracks that underscore a sense of musical ambition that's often downright prog-centric, yet never merely self-indulgent. --Jerry McCulley | | | | This record has so much good material that it's a shame the production is so shoddy. Songwise, this is probably Metallica's most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. "One" is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more than nine minutes. It's the epic of the album, but all of the songs are long, displaying impressive chops and songwriting. Metallica took a commercial turn after ...And Justice for All, and it's interesting to speculate on what would have happened to their music had they continued in the direction suggested by this album. --Genevieve Williams | |

| | Two years after the death of bassist Cliff Burton,Metallica bounced back and releases "...And Justice For All" in 1988 with new bassist Jason Newsted. It reflects the anger and sadness towards Cliff's death and Metallica made probabaly their most complex album here, with many tempo changes and the album has "Anger!" written all over it.This release is just as good as the previous releases of the band if not better. Its full of epic songs such as the title track,"One" and "Eye Of The Beholder",and all of the 9 songs on the album are no less than 5 minutes each and many of them are considered classics of Metallica. This album is actually considered by some fans as the last trash metal album Metallica ever made, and in some cases the last good album they did. While those opinions are certainly discussible "And Justice For All" is certainly a great album from Metallica, and i beleve that it is their last Trash Metal album.Actually at times it seems to be even more raw and heavy than some of their other albums and it contains "To Live Is To Die" a song on wich former basssit Cliff Burton wrote the lyrics and that is mostly a tribute to Cliff.
"...And Justic For All" is a masterpiece from beggening to finnish, filled with long Epics and you can that each musician here except newbie Jason Newsted play to their full potential. If you didn't think Lars Ulrich was a great drummer before this album, you will as Lars is really focused here its probabaly the album he plays best on.Kirk Hammet probably never played better and Jame Hetfield's vocals are unleashed! They all play great here but Jason Newsted is notably absent from the album as you don't hear much if any bass at all it seems as it was erased or just never done,so the album is just guitars. Some say that the bass's sound is burried under the massive guitars and it could be true.Because of that the album sounds real raw but that's how some metal heads like it,if you want one of their more sophisticated release you are at the wrong place. This is pure Metallica, you already can picture them playing with their ripped jeans and t-shirt just getting down to the metal buisiness, they don't do glam things its just about the music and this album reflects that nicely. At least that's who they were in 1988...
I previously said that this album had some of Metallica's best songs and im getting to that point right now.I have to start with my personnal favourite "One" wich is an impressive song at 7:27,its a great near ballad with some agressive pace changes and i would have to nominate this particuliar song as one of Metallica's best songs if not their best, you can just feel the anger in it trought Jame's voice,i like it!The opener "Blackened" is a strong album opener, nearly has a scary feel the sudden change of tempo is nicely done and the lyrics are awesome a great song. The title track is another epic, this one is pretty long as it is over 9 minutes! Many listeners won't get to the end of it,its underrated."Eye Of The Beholder" is amongst the best songs of the album, another anger-filled song."The Shortest Straw" has a great chorus and is great overral, its unerapreciated of you ask me but its pretty good stuff.
I won't say anymore, the songs are terrific and this album is definatly worth a listen."...And Justice For All" is often forgotten because it was made between the classic "Master Of Puppets" and their commercial succes, the "Black Album" or "Metallica" if you prefer. It shouldn't because it is as good as those two albums if not better and has amazing arrangements and complex songs, along with an overral dark feeling and a touch of anger everywhere. If you want to hear unleashed Metallica THIS is the place! Its a masterpiece for a metalhead like a Picasso would be for an artist. Also this was the last album before they went comercial with their next album.Actually they started to be commercial for this album, they made a video when they said never would make any,but this is definatly their last true trash metal album.
| | One of Metallica's best album. And Justice for all rocks!! | |
| | Metallica's ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL is one of the best metal albums from the 80s. The song, One was nominated for a Grammy award for best metal performance and the song, One reached the top 40 on the Hot 100 Singles chart and probably the heaviest song to hit the top 40 before Smells Like Teen Spirit and Enter Sandman. Metallica is perhaps the best metal band of all-time. Harvestor of Sorrow is another great song from this album.
ONE IS A MASTERPIECE AND QUITE POSSIBLY, THE BEST METAL SONG OF ALL-TIME.
| | | This alubum is undescriptible!!!!!! Kirk Hammett's solos make me speechless, Hetfield's voice is at his best, Newsted is taking nicely his place (R.I.P Cliff) and Lars is wild as a lion! loll It would have been so great that fade to black and sanitarium would have been on this album .. it would have been heum.. GIGANTIC, but anyway, it still soo great! Here are my rates ! Blackened: 9.9/10 (Great choice for track °1) ...And justice for all: 11/10 (That song has been my favorite song for about half of a year, I wasn't able to pass a day without listening to it, the lyrics are just too powerful..) Eye of the beholder: 9.9/10 (Nice song) One: 15/10 (Listen to the beginning of the song with the sound up and up and up and you'll understand why I put 15.. The rest of the song still really great, especially when the beat becomes faster *Darkness!*) The shortest straw: 8/10 (I don't like that song.. Maybe was it written for Cliff but I think that it wasn't a nice choice.. The lyrics are weird and the music doesn't fit with them..) Harvester of sorrow: 10/10 (Really great song) Frayed ends of sanity: 10/10 (Listen carefully to the lyrics) To live is to die: 11/10 (Why? This song just kick ass 9:48 minutes without being bored, only Metallica knows how to do) Dyers eve: 10.5/10 (Heaaaaavyy song ! Well, being Lars during this song, I could have died 15 times! The drums are so tight!)
| | | | This is definitely Metallica's peak. Overall, "Ride The Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" are just barely better than this album but there's something about it that is very intriguing. Metallica fully showed their potential on this album. 1) This is how you follow up an album like MOP. 2) Every song is consistent and takes on a new direction. 3) Name a song where Kirk Hammett doesnt play a kickass solo. 1. Blackened. 10/10 What an opener! Very fast and some kickass riffing towards the end. Sets the standards for the rest of the album. 2. And Justice For All. 10/10 Don't complain if it drags on too long. Metallica are the only band who could make a song like this. 3. Eye of the Beholder. 10/10 I don't see whats wrong with the beginning. Awesome solos around 5 minutes into the song. 4. One. 11/10 Best song on the album. Best song of Metallica's career. Enough said. 5. The Shortest Straw. 9/10 Good song but I tend to enjoy it less because "One" is before it. 6. Harvester of Sorrow. 10/10 Only 5:42. Second shortest song on the album but kickass. 7. Frayed Ends Of Sanity. 9/10 What the hell is up with the beginning? It gets better though. 8. To Live Is To Die. 10/10 An EPIC Metallica instrumental in tribute to Cliff Burton. 9. Dyers Eve. 10/10 Arguably Lars Ulrich's best song ever. Just listen to him on drums. Great way to close it out.
| | | Well here it is...metallica's peak. Everything from kill em all until this has gotten better...but this is where it stops. I'm not saying I dont' like black album and later...I think they all are MASTERPIECES! But this is the BEST metallica album. A lot of things are happening here...Cliff Burton passed away...so this is the first studio album with the new bass player...Jason Newsted. I don't mind jason... but cliff was 100x better. You can't even hear jason's playin in this album (the production SUCKS!).1)Blackened - I love this song. Fast...the main riff is killer, and lars' double bass is wicked too. 10/10 2)...and justice for all - i (personally) love this song. Most people say it droans on too long. Kirk hammett (lead guitar) said that they won't play it live anymore because they saw too many people in the crowd yawning. so that explains it. 9/10 3)Eye of the Beholder - I don't much care for the intro...but it gets better. not bad. 8.5/10 4)ONE - Metallica classic. If it wasn't for this song there wouldn't be a metallica now. One brought them to fame as they released their first music video. This song is incredible...lars really pulls it off in the interlude...and kirk blew me away with that crazy solo. The lyric's are VERY powerful. 11/10 5)Shortest Straw - Cool song, the lyric's are about Cliff's death. Stong lyrics good solo...- 8.5/10 6)Harvester of Sorrow - Cool song, I love the intro...the main riff is fun to play on guitar...over all good - 9/10 7)Frayed Ends of Sanity - Stupid intro..but the rest gets better. - 8.75/10 8)To live is to Die - Instrumental. Incredible. THis is the last song that cliff burton wrote before he passed away. I love this song. IT's just great. - 10/10 9)Dyers Eve - WOA! Lars' kicks ass on this song...the double bass is soo fast i've never heard anything like it. THe lyric's are strong...fast...overall greatness. 10/10 I love this album...kirk pulled off some of the greatest solos ever, lars's drumming is at the top of it's class...james' lyrics are outstanding...and jason's bass...well you couldn't really hear it lol. The songs are amazing... BUY THIS ALBUM
